How to decide what hair colour would suit you
Dying your hair is one of the best ways to showcase your personal style and express yourself. Hair colour can completely transform your face and really enhance your features.
There are so many shades and colouring options to choose from, selecting the perfect colour can seem impossible. Go for the wrong shade and it could potentially wash you out.
There are a few ways to determine the right colour range for you, and here are some factors to consider when making your decision…
The undertone is the colour underneath the surface of your skin. This can be an incredibly confusing topic and it takes many of us years to determine what our true undertone is. It is divided into two categories; warm and cool.
Cool has pink, red or bluish undertones. Warm has yellow, peachy or golden undertones. A way to determine what you are is to try on silver and gold jewellery. Decide which one suits you the best and makes your skin look more radiant. If it is silver, you most likely have cool undertones. If it is gold, you probably have warm undertones.
Once you have determined this, you can begin your research into what colour range is best for your skin.
It is much easier to show your hairdresser a photo of exactly what you want rather than trying to explain it to them. It is much easier to mis-communicate with words than it is by showing a photo.
Make sure to do plenty of research prior to your appointment and find a few photos of what you want to achieve. It also helps to find photos of what you don’t want to make sure your vision is clear and understood.
At your consultation we will recommend the best way to achieve your desired look and work on a tailored plan for your unique hair. We also take into consideration the condition and health of your hair as this is incredibly important in the long run.
Leave it to the professionals
Hairdressers spend years training in their profession to master colouring, styling and cutting. This is because it is very technical and takes a lot of expert knowledge to get the perfect cut or colour.
Not only can box dyes cause your hair a great deal of damage, but it is also incredibly difficult to master the right colour with a DIY job. If it does go wrong, it makes it even harder to get the right colour and remove the unwanted pigment in your hair.
When it comes to colouring, leave it to a professional hairdresser to achieve a refined look that perfectly suits you.
If you are looking for a drastic change, such as light blonde to dark brown, or vice versa, think about if you’re willing to maintain this transformation. A big style change like this will require touch ups to maintain, such as dying your roots and freshening up the colour.
If you are looking for something that requires minimal touch ups and is low maintenance, try not to stray too far away from your natural colour. This is because the roots or fading of colour won’t be as noticeable.
Beautiful hair colour shades
When it comes to hair colour shades, the possibilities are endless. Similar to skin undertones, shades are generally grouped into cool, neutral and warm. Looking into this even further, all shades can be categorised into either blonde, brunette, red or grey.
Find some shade inspiration below and helpful information about which shades work best with different skin tones and colours.
This can be anything from a super light platinum blonde to a dark blonde/ very light brown. Going blonde can be a lot of fun for those who are naturally darker. There is such a variety of shades that will achieve different looks and styles.
A warm-honey/ golden shade looks young, Summery and bright. Add in some highlights to add depth and glowing appearance.
An icy, platinum blonde shade is striking and edgy. Although it requires a lot of work to maintain, it is an exciting colour that will make you stand out from the crowd.
Who said brown was boring? Certainly not us! There are so many rich brown shades to enhance your skin colour and features. Find your perfect shade and your hair style will look professional, luxurious and tailor made for you.
If you’re a natural brunette and you want to spice things up, try adding a few subtle highlights. This can add a lot of dimension to your locks and really brighten things up.
Not all brown shades have to be warm toned. Opt for a refreshing cool toned shade to try something new.
Red is a beautiful colour that works on so many skin colours. This is because it is so versatile and there is such a huge range of shades. From subtle to bold and fiery, red is a fun colour to try.
If you’re looking to make a statement with your red and want something that is bright and bold, why not try an exciting scarlet shade. This works especially well on medium to deeper skin tones and can be toned down to a darker more crimson shade.
If you have a paler complexion, a rich copper or auburn would work perfectly. Go for an all over colour to give an edgier look or add some depth with highlights.
Hair colour techniques 2018 – Colour melting
There have been many colouring trends over the past few years, with the most popular being ombré and balayage. Colour melting is the next step in this hair dye evolution and is a sophisticated technique that our customers love.
Colour melting mimics the natural pattern of hair colour. When looking at hair that has never been dyed, the roots are naturally darker and the colour gets lighter as it gets towards the ends. This is due to many reasons such as oxidisation, exposure to sun light and product use.
This innovative technique replicates this impeccable transition from one colour to another, creating natural and smooth results. Any shade can be used with this technique, from blondes, brunettes, greys, bright colours and pastels.
If you are looking to freshen up your look this year and try something new, book a consultation with one of our professional hairdressers to see how colour melting can work for you,
Do I need a patch/ skin test before my appointment?
A patch test is a small test our hairdressers apply to your skin to identify any allergies or reactions. It is a simple way to check that the colour is safe to use on your hair.
If you are new to k2 Hair Design, a patch test is required at least 48 hours before your appointment.
This is a standard procedure at our Wolverhampton hairdressers to ensure your skin won’t have a negative reaction with the chemicals in our hair dye. Even if you have previously had a test at another salon, we still require a test with our hair dye as it may contain different ingredients.
